March 27, 2020 Update:

This afternoon we were informed the School Closure will be extended until April 17th.   If the closure remains as is, we will resume classes on April 20th

Up until April 6th, our staff has been working hard to prepare learning materials for students during the closure and preparing for remote teaching. They are using a variety of platforms to accomplish this and they are learning as they go. We certainly appreciate your patience and participation during these times. The materials that have been shared and will be shared until April 6th are supplemental materials meant to support the learning that has taken place and provide opportunity for students to get caught up on any missed assignments. After April 6th, the learning will include new material and will be graded. Classes will continue after April 6th as if we were in session. Grades will be taken for all courses. Teachers are busy putting together plans for contacting students and parents for the days ahead. They are establishing office hours for communication with students and adults.  In these times, communication is our best tool. Please continue to stay in contact with your children’s teachers and buildings.

As far as the future goes, at this time no decisions have been made on whether spring sports will return, graduation continues to be a topic of conversation with perhaps some creative means to allow families to celebrate. Prom is anyone’s guess.  If we come back in May, Prom could still take place.  For juniors wishing to take the ACT, we are still waiting for directives on how this will take place.  At this time, no ACT tests are scheduled, but we will keep you informed as we learn more.

In closing, I would like once again to express my gratitude for the patience and support you have provided to our staff.  If there is anything, and I mean anything, that we can do to help you during these times, please do not hesitate to contact the school.   It does not need to be academic in nature, we have resources available and outside agencies which have also volunteered their resources.  So, you need something, please let us know and we will do what we can to assist you.   Please continue to protect your families and keep them safe.

March 17, 2020 Update: Crook County School District #1 will be following the Governor’s recommendations with school closures through April 3rd.  Classes are currently set to resume on April 6th.

Our school staff will be in the buildings on Wednesday, March 25th and Wednesday, April 1.   These will serve as work days for teachers to prepare learning activities for students and for staff to prepare food for delivery for those families requesting assistance with meals.  Please note that additional communication in relation to learning activities and meals will be provided by your child’s attendance center.

The current communication that we have received from the Wyoming Department of Education indicates that we will not have to make up the days missed while following the Governor’s recommendation.   If the closure should continue past the current recommended date of April 6th, we may receive other directives in relation to potential make-up days and/or extension of the school year.   At this time, our graduation and last days of school remain the same.

Please contact your school for any additional needs you may have.   We are working to prepare for this as well as we can as there are many unanswered questions at this time.   We will do our best to keep you up to date as new information becomes available.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigate these unprecedented times.

March 15, 2020: I would like to thank the families and staff of CCSD #1 for your support and patience as the impact of the COVID-19 virus begins to impact our communities.  We have been working closely with our local public health experts to provide guidance in our decisions moving forward.  While we do not have any confirmed cases at this time, we are taking preventative measures to reduce the possibility for spreading the virus. This is especially prudent considering the size of our medical facilities and staffing.

After  recommendation from the State Superintendent of Schools, Public Health Officials and state and local officials, we have decided to close all CCSD #1 schools starting tomorrow, Monday, March 16th.  Schools will remain closed until further notice. We will communicate to families as soon as we have the necessary  information to make future decisions. Please remain vigilant in your prevention efforts by washing hands frequently, covering a cough or sneeze with a sleeve or tissue, and staying home if you are sick. It is incumbent on us all to take these preventative measures to help our community stay healthy, especially those over the age of 60 or with underlying health conditions.

We understand children and families may have heightened concerns about exposure to this virus causing stress and anxiety.  The following resources may be helpful in visiting with your child about this situation:

The National Association of School Psychologists:  https://www.nasponline.org/resources-and-publications/resources-and-podcasts/school-climate-safety-and-crisis/health-crisis-resources/talking-to-children-about-covid-19-(coronavirus)-a-parent-resource

PBS (https://www.pbs.org/parents/thrive/how-to-talk-to-your-kids-about-coronavirus)

As always, safety is our primary concern. Thank you for your support as our district works to ensure the health and wellbeing of our entire community.  Please refer to the district website (www.crook1.com) for ongoing updates. At this time it is impossible to know if we are overreacting, but it’s better than underreacting and experiencing a much more severe outcome.
